From Mortal to Magic: Michelle M. Pillow on Crafting Paranormal Adventures

1)      What is your Author name; use your Pen name if you have one.

Michelle M. Pillow

2)      What is your genre and what drew you to it?

I’m known as a multi-genre writer, with everything from epic fantasy to gothic Regency to futuristic sci-fi. I write primarily in the paranormal and sci-fi romance genres, but my newest book is an urban fantasy. I've always been fascinated by the supernatural and the way it intersects with human emotions and experiences. These genres allow me to create rich, fantastical worlds where anything is possible and where the stakes are heightened by the presence of magic, mythical creatures, and otherworldly forces.

3)      What inspired you to become a writer?

My journey as a writer began with a deep-seated love for storytelling. Growing up, I was an avid reader, captivated by the power of words to transport me to different worlds. I was particularly inspired by authors like Anne Rice, whose ability to blend romance, fantasy, and the supernatural left a lasting impression on me. I wanted to create my own stories that could evoke the same sense of wonder and adventure.

4)      Which character of yours was the most challenging to write and why?

Tamara, the protagonist of "Merely Mortal," was particularly challenging to write. As a mortal thrust into a supernatural world, she grapples with her own sense of identity and purpose. Balancing her vulnerability with her strength and resilience required careful consideration to ensure she remained relatable and authentic while navigating extraordinary circumstances.

5)      Do you prefer writing dialogue, action or other scenes?

I enjoy writing anything that amps up the emotion. I like dialogue because it allows me to explore the nuances of character interactions and relationships. Through dialogue, I can reveal personalities, motivations, and conflicts in a way that feels natural and engaging. That said, action scenes are thrilling to write as they drive the plot forward and provide opportunities for characters to demonstrate their growth and resolve.

6)      Have you ever taken a course on writing or advertising? If so, which one(s) and how would you rate them?

I took college courses in English and business, and I read a lot of nonfiction books. I’ve also attended various workshops at conferences over the years. I don’t think you need to take a course to hone your craft, but if you find one that speaks to what you feel you need to improve, it’s worth checking into. I found I’ve learned the most just by having conversations with other creatives.

7)     Did you ever feel like giving up? If so, how did you overcome that?

Like many writers, I’ve faced moments of doubt and frustration. During those times, I remind myself why I started writing in the first place—my love for storytelling and the joy it brings. I’m very lucky to have grown up with supportive parents. I also find support from my writing community, including my best friend and fellow author Mandy M. Roth, and my husband, John, who helps me brainstorm and plot out my stories. Their encouragement and feedback are invaluable.

8)      What is the one thing you wish you knew at the beginning of your writing journey?

I wish I had known that the path to becoming a successful author is rarely straightforward. There will be setbacks, rejections, and moments of self-doubt, but persistence and a genuine passion for writing are key. Also, the importance of building a supportive writing community cannot be said enough.

9)      Which book, other than your own, would you like to see turned into a movie or T.V. show?

I would love to see Mandy M. Roth’s "Prince with a Chance of Darkness" from her Grimm Cove series turned into a TV show. Actually, that whole series! The blend of humor, romance, and gothic supernatural elements would make for an incredibly entertaining and visually stunning series.

10)  What is your favorite character from any book you have ever read?

Elizabeth Bennet from Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" has always been a favorite of mine. Her wit, intelligence, and strong sense of self make her an enduring and relatable character. Elizabeth's journey of personal growth, along with her ability to remain true to herself while navigating societal expectations, is both inspiring and timeless. Her character embodies the balance of strength and vulnerability, making her a profound influence on my own writing and character development.

11)  What is your favorite quote and why?

"Not all those who wander are lost." – J.R.R. Tolkien.

I like its meaning. Every journey of self-discovery, whether physically or within yourself, has meaning, even if you don’t travel down the “normal” path.

12)  What is one book that is currently on your To-Be-Read list?

I’m looking forward to reading "Fourth Wing" by Rebecca Yarros. It’s been highly recommended, and I’m eager to dive into its world of dragons and fantasy adventure.

13)  What is the name of your book/series? Tell me a little bit about them.

The name of my series is "Merely Mortal." The first book, "Merely Mortal," (June 2024) introduces Tamara, a mortal woman who finds herself thrust into a supernatural world where she must navigate complex family secrets and mystical legacies. As she grapples with her own sense of identity and purpose, she forms alliances and confronts dangers that test her resolve. The second book, "Mostly Shattered," (Oct 2024) continues her journey, delving deeper into the supernatural intrigue and emotional depth that define her story.
